I don't know what I'm impressed with the most: the amazing bass, the excellent stereo division, or how loud they can get! These things are just as amazing as most of the reviews show them to be and then a lot more... I was worried about the eighties styling, but in person they don't look bad at all. I hate headphones that scream for attention, but these don't look like that when you have them on and I have already been wearing them in public (something I didn't think I would do after only seeing the picture of them online). And even if they're a bit outdated in appearance, the design is so functional you won't even give looks a second thought after you put them on.
One thing is for sure: these things have plenty of bass! Not too much (not "boomy"), but they seem properly tuned for listening to things without "bass booster" turned on, which I like. Even with the bass settings adjusted high, the bass remains clear and crisp. I'm not sure how much power these can handle without damaging them, but I listen to them very loud and they do not sound distorted or stressed at all. After a few days my left speaker began making some weird noises and it ended up being a hair stuck inside the headphones that I cleared out with canned air. Something important to consider is that these are very open and airy headphones and the treble carries very well outside the headphones (so someone nearby could definitely hear what you're listening to if you have the volume up loud).
Others have mentioned that they felt the headphones were too tight feeling, but I have a very large head and they fit me without a problem. However, if I will be wearing them for an extended period of time I always set them to the "Light" setting on the comfortZone control (which divides the side pressure of the headphones with your temples rather than just on your ears).
I already had headphones I was pleased with (Sony MDR-G52s and Koss UR-20s) but I wanted a set of small, portable headphones for use with my laptop and these are perfect. The folding design isn't something I necessarily wanted, but it is nice. The carrying case they come with (a leatherette bag) is a slightly tight fit and I probably won't end up using it much since it is not a hard case that would protect them from shock or crushing. Some others have mentioned that they feel delicate or are easily broken, but compared to other small headphones I have had they seem very well built and equally strong considering their light weight.
While I wouldn't say these are bad things about the PortaPros, it is worth mentioning that the headband is metal and will occasionally snag a hair as you adjust it on your head, and that they don't fold down as small as you might think they would so don't expect to put them in your pants pocket or something. Considering these are the worst things I can come up with to say about the PortaPros, they are nearly perfect in my book.
I can't say enough good things about these PortaPros! They're simply amazing. These are the first headphones (or speakers) I've had that sound absolutely awesome without adjusting the equalizer or pumping up the bass. They sound good on everything from R&B to Country and everything in-between. I've been especially impressed that they pull the bass and highs out of a song without getting that shrill, tinny treble that plagues so many headphones. If there ever was a question about the quality of Koss stereophones in my mind, these PortaPros have put it to rest and made me into a lifetime customer! If you're like me you'll wish you had discovered these legendary headphones (haha! how often is that said?) years ago...
Cost: Nothing beats the price to performance of the classic Koss Porta Pro. Nothing. I have owned and tried many types of headphones from many brands. The build quality and sound from these $40 headphones are unbeatable for the price. At first glance the plastic and metal seems a little flimsy. But it's not soft pliable plastic. The metal retains it's shape very well after many wears and trips.
Sound: I have listened to my music through all types of mediums. Headphones, IEMs, and my home theater sound system. The Koss Porta Pro gives me as much pleasure in listening to music as my home theaters 5.1 surround sound system. After listening to the Koss Porta Pro for a few weeks my Sennheiser HD558 sounds sibilant. The Koss Porta Pros sound signature is warm. It favors to lower frequencies. That is how I prefer to listen to my music, more bass/mid heavy. I recommend these headphones for all types of music but it will shine the most with rock, metal, rap, hip hop, and jazz.
Comfort: They are very light. The soft foam pads will allow for all day usage with minimal discomfort. They do not press down on your ears hard like other headphones with leave your ears feeling sore. If that's not enough, it has two extra comfort settings to make the foam ear pads feel even lighter on your ears. This works by having the comfort band extend the foam that makes contact on your head. Therefore transferring pressure to your head (barely feel it) rather than your delicate ears.
Portability: They aren't called Porta Pros for nothing. They fold up nicely and fit into a small leather bag which is included.
These have been around for nearly 35 years. Unchanged design. Why? They are perfect. The ONLY downfalls are that the headband which sometimes get caught with your hairs. Some people remedy this by taping the top. I just adjust the headband before putting it on my head. Also, some people complain of the wires. They feel more fragile than other headphones. If you're careful they'll last years. If it breaks you pay $7 shipping to send your earphones to Koss and they send you a replacement for free.
Skip the Bose, Beats by Dre, Sennheiser, Sony. It's not about saving money. These are simply BETTER. In 20 years those earphones will have changed design for the 1000th time. However, these Koss Porta Pros will remain unchanged and popular. They are perfect, and to be honest I like the retro look. Don't fall for marketing hype. You don't always get your moneys worth by paying more. These $40 headphones are more than enough and I am in love with the sound signature and comfort.
Top reviews from other countries
When you buy one of these as a hobbyist, you look back at your audio, wondering where you've gone wrong. It's not quite audiophile enough to replace my more expensive, albeit larger sets of headphones, but it's not quite bassy enough to satisfy my basshead beast that's leaching off my life essence (curse you Sony Extrabass and your extra-bassyness that not even the bass the fish can sate my evergrowing lust for extra bass). I'd compare the bass level to what sony throws out on their non-Xtra-Bass lines of headphones.
There's enough width to sound to almost pretend I'm in the place of recording... almost. It just lacks that little bit of something that ruins the immersion. Yeah sure it's wide, but what's the point if you're fully aware that what you're listening to is only a sample of what the audiophile world has in store for you? The audio listening hobby quickly shifts from a minor purchase here and there to irresponsible spending in a blink of an eye... and before you know it you've created a black hole in your wallet where your hund-o's used to live.
That's what this is, unsatisfying in any way you look at it, if you've gotten a glimpse of what it could've been with a few more tens, hund-o's, or grandies to spend.
Build quality is competent, but I wish the clamping force wasn't so hard, and the foam that's supposed to sit on the head to alleviate the problem doesn't reach my big, dumb head.
Comfort is there, but not enough. The furthest settings for the "comfortZone" (which adjusts how much pressure the earpads assert on your poor ears) is just not light enough for my sensitive ears. I don't think I can spend a whole day wearing these without my ears getting sore. Good news for glasses wearers though (at least some of them), the pressure is put on the antitragus and the tragus, so though you'll get discomfort (or at least itchiness) in those middle outer parts of your ears, your glasses frame will likely not dig into your skull! But of course your mileage may vary.
The cable is not noisy at all, though I don't think that matters much considering that these are open back, and you'll definitely hear the cable whack around furniture due to careless usage.
The audio quality, though really good for the price, short of a miracle that everyone claims it to be, and a bit too bassy for ex-bassheads (and not bassy enough for the bassheads). It's a pretty warm sound, but the mids and highs are present enough to make it seem like it just has that extra bass on top of a balanced sound.
Sure the driver units can be popped off and attached to other attachments (I've actually gone and put them on a KSC75 earhook), and the foam pad can be replaced with the much more comfortable and better sounding YAXI earpads... however I'm reviewing the product as it's own... and without any accessories (except a "protein leather" egg bag), this product is not good enough for all the praise everyone's screaming out...
But that's what it is. Disappointment if and ONLY IF you set your expectations stupidly high based on reviews bowing down before its presence. If you ignore all the fans (somehow) and just buy the product expecting nothing but a 50$-sounding headphones, prepare to have your socks blown off to next sunday cuz this set of headphones is the best retro-style good-sounding headphones for the money!
When you buy this, don't expect a giant-killer; Be humble, and you'll get more than you've bargained for. If not, at least these do well as conversation starters and/or room decoration.

When you buy this, don't expect a giant-killer; Be humble, and you'll get more than you've bargained for. If not, at least these do well as conversation starters and/or room decoration.
Dikke vette aanrader.
